Funding Your Student’s Education: Your Options

Free Tuition: The Arizona ESA

The Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program is an account administered by The Arizona Department of Education that is funded by state tax dollars to provide educational options for qualified Arizona students. By opting out of the public school system, parents can seek a range of alternative educational services, such as private school or home-based education, to tailor an individualized educational plan that is best for their child.

Eligibility requirements for the Arizona ESA

  • Preschool Students or K-12 students with a disability

  • K-12 students must have attended an AZ school for more than 100 days (or make up hours online to qualify)

  • Primary eligibility for Special Education listed on IEP, 504 or MET

  • Visit the ESA site for full eligibility requirements

Approaching ESA Deadlines

  • 2018-2019 Applications are currently being accepted until March 1, 2019 to receive quarter 4 funding (April to June 2019).

  • 2019-2020 Applications will be available February 1, 2019.

  • Applications take up to 45 days to process.

Other Tuition Resources: Student Tuition Orgs

Arizona has great laws that allow taxpayers to take control of how their state taxes are spent by utilizing state tax credits. We've partnered with several Student Tuition Organizations (STO’s) in Arizona to provide this tuition funding option to parents.

How it works:

  1. Taxpayers redirect up to $2,177 (married filing jointly) of what they owe in Arizona state taxes to a School Tuition Organization (STO) and recommend PS Academy to receive those funds.

  2. The STO will then grant those funds to PS Academy families in the form of tuition scholarships.

  3.  The redirected funds are taken as a dollar-for-dollar credit/reduction off of their state tax liability. (Net cost is zero.) In addition, if they donate by the end of December, these donations are eligible to be used as a deduction off of federal taxes. They can make money by donating!

Taxpayers benefit because they can control how their taxes are used and feel good about helping PS Academy families. Families benefit because they receive scholarship awards to help lower or cover all tuition costs.

Learn more about STO's and how you can encourage people to help fund your student's tuition at absolutely no cost to them by redirecting their taxes here.

My older son was bullied mercilessly in public schools and I prayed that I would find a school where he fit in. He struggled to learn because the “one size fits all” approach didn’t fit him. Since his first day at PS Academy he has made amazing strides academically and socially. He is getting straight A’s and has a group of friends whom he socializes with regularly. I work two jobs and yet could never afford private school tuition. Because he does not qualify for the Empowerment Scholarship Account, utilizing funding from a school tuition organization is our only option. It takes commitment on the part of the parents to be successful using this program, but I know that my son is where he belongs and I will do whatever it takes to keep him there. I am so grateful that Arizona has this program in place so that parents can choose the best placement for their student!
